Around seven decades ago, a number of fishing families relocated from Madura to the eastern shoreline of Java, attracted by the abundance of marine life. When rough seas kept them ashore and their fishing nets had already been repaired, they began experimenting with crafts made from shells that would otherwise have been thrown away. Capiz shells, also known as Jingle Oysters, thrive in the shallow coastal waters and were once valued only for their meat, with the shells discarded as waste. Today, those shells are transformed into beautiful handcrafted pieces, ensuring every part is put to good use. Designed by Andrea Phillips, this collection of capiz shell wind chimes is skillfully created by these fishing communities, who have developed their craft over generations. Each chime is carefully assembled in a fair-trade workshop in Bali, blending traditional craftsmanship with sustainable practices.
