Founded by Chonita Mendiesa, an Indigenous woman who lost her husband in a violent war. Chonita needed a way to support herself and her children so she began this family-run business from a town on the coast of Lake Alitan, Guatemala, The business, through 15 workshops, now employs about 100 widows and young women. They make beaded jewelry and crocheted hacky sacks. Through the years she has taught essential beading skills while paying fair wages for labor. Chonita uses profits from the business to support a variety of community aid projects: supplying monthly food baskets and basic living supplies to 55 needy widows. The business also supports 15 children with scholarships, runs a local school, and covers medical expenses.
