These baskets are made by artisans in Ghana using the Batik process. The batiker artisans will use a stencil and trace new designs onto blocks of foam. The negative space in the design is cut out of the foam using a sharp blade. AZO free dyes are purchased at market and mixes in the correct quantities. A mixture of paraffin and beeswax is then melted together until it is a hot liquid and the carved foam is dipped in the hot wax and gently stamped on the cotton. When the wax stamping has cooled the cotton is folded or rolled into the dye. The fabric is dried after the first dye bath and the process is repeated for each colour. When there are multiple colours in a batik, you dye from light to dark.
