Two silver-toned hoops fall from a ring in these drop earrings. “Disability is not Inability” (Motto) In Mombasa, Kenya, 100 artisans with physical disabilities are employed in this rehabilitation workshop enabling them to support themselves and their families.
Founded in 1969 and sponsored by the Association for the Physical Disabled of Kenya, the artisans are trained in many fields including screen printing, crafting, wood carving, and jewelry making in silver plate, copper and brass. Artisans are paid fairly and receive other benefits including adult education, medical aid, and housing. Employment is scarce in Kenya for persons with disabilities and so working for this fair trade group creates dignified employment, helps break down harmful stigmas and allows for members of the group to become fully integrated within their community.
